Inspection Report 04/12/2020

OVERVIEW

This inspection was to remove the winterized

COLONY 1 - West Facing

This inspection was to do several items:

  1. Remove winterizing

  2. Add sugar water feeding

  3. Add Pollen Feed

Remove Winterizing

I removed the winter wrapping of the hive. This is the tar paper that I put on in the fall to help insulate the hive over the winter. Now that it’s getting warmer, it is important to remove the insulation so as to not make the hive too warm in the spring and allow for proper ventilation.

Wrapping was removed and stored for next year.

Add Sugar Water

Now that is warmer, I gave them some sugar water to help kickstart the queen into laying and building of brood. This helps get the colony growing for the summer.

Add Pollen Feed

Part of stimulating the queen is adding a protein source. This is typically done when flowers start to bloom in the spring via the pollen. I added what is called a “pollen patty” that is a pollen substitute. This will also kick start the queen into laying eggs, and thus growing the colony!

Recommendation: Continue to feed and help the colony grow. Also, we should split the colony back into two (both colonies were merged to help with wintering last fall).
